The Wye Bridge House
It’s fair to say we’re already very familiar with The Wye Bridge House in Buxton. Long before our little boy was born we visited here frequently, for both food and for a good night out. The food is very reasonably priced and selection of drinks available is phenomenal, also at rock bottom prices!
To give you a bit of background information, the Wye Bridge House is well-positioned in Buxton, close to the town centre, offering lots of space inside and one of the biggest beer gardens in the town. It is open from breakfast time right through to last orders, which can be as late as midnight at weekends.
The pub itself can be very busy at peak times and with the new COVID restrictions we were keen to see how they handled the rules which need to be in place. The inside is well-spaced out now with screens between a lot of the tables. There is hand sanitiser available throughout the pub. The track and trace system is strongly encouraged, with both paper forms to fill in and an electronic QR code system available. We have been in several times since it opened and they do not allow too many people to enter the pub. When it has been busy they have staff showing you to a free table and ensuring that social distancing rules are adhered to.
On the day which we visited to write this review, the pub was busy, but we quickly found a table. There was plenty of space for the pushchair and it was clean and ready for us to sit down. Unfortunately with it being a Sunday, we were unable to take advantage of the Eat out to Help Out Scheme, but that was not a problem as the prices are already great value for money.
I ordered one of the Sunday ‘deals’, the Steak Egg and Chips and Andrew ordered the Mixed Grill. Both come with a drink included. All this was done using their convenient and easy to use App. Within 15 minutes both our food and drinks were at our table and we were tucking in. The steak which I ordered as ‘rare’ came exactly as I requested. Andrew’s mixed grill was tasty, with him commenting that the chicken breast was juicy and not dry as it sometimes can be!
We then went on to order puddings – Apple Crumble and Chocolate Fudge cake, both came with ice cream. Again we did this from the comfort of our table, using the app and the bowls arrived before we knew it.
Our overall experience on this day was good, but this is the norm in our experience. We have also recently tried breakfasts with refillable coffees and in the past, we have thoroughly enjoyed their pizzas which in our opinion easily beat those of the high street chains such as Pizza Express.
The Wetherspoon brand is like Marmite, some love it and some just can’t stand it, but our experience on this day and in the past has been nothing but good. All I can say don’t knock it until you’ve tried it; you’d be hard pushed to find meals and drink of comparable quality at such low prices!
