Sushi Kaji Japanese Restaurant
A new kind of taste has opened in town. The real taste of Sushi has arrived in Buxton…and we couldn’t wait to try it! Situated at the far end of High Street, this Japanese restaurant really is worth a visit.
Due to lockdown, Sushi Kaji at first operated as a take-away only service and we’d heard mixed reviews about the quality of food from our friends so, once restrictions were eased and the restaurant was allowed to fully open, we decided to give it a go and booked a table.
For simplicity, I sent them a message one evening via Facebook to try and reserve a table the following lunchtime but received an automated response saying that bookings had to be made by phone, not Facebook. Early the next day I received a second message asking for my contact phone number so that they could telephone me to book us in. I thought this was a lovely gesture and was delighted when they rang to confirm that they could fit us in at the time we wanted to eat.
We visited Sushi Kaji on Wednesday 12th August, which had been one of the hottest days of the year. Thankfully the restaurant was air-conditioned which made our lunch a very comfortable experience, even more so due to the fact that the restaurant is spacious, bright and incredibly clean. We were welcomed on arrival and quickly seated at our table by the very pleasant waiter and it wasn’t long before we were enjoying an ice-cold and incredibly refreshing Ashai beer!
The menu is very extensive, but neither of us knows much about Japanese cuisine so we opted for a two-person combination which included miso soup to start with and was then followed with a beautifully presented platter of mixed Sashimi, Nigiri, Uramaki, Gunkan, Noori Maki and Hot Roll. Surprisingly the Sashimi was my favourite; a Japanese delicacy consisting of fresh raw fish sliced into thin pieces and eaten with a splash of soy sauce – it really was delicious! Don’t worry if raw fish ain’t your thing though…their menu really does cater for all tastes, including children’s.
Overall, we both had a fantastic time during our visit to Sushi Kaji and the food really was of a high standard. Some of the dishes can be quite pricey but this is very much reflected in the quality of the food and presentation. We had been quite fortunate as we could take advantage of the Government Eat Out to Help Out scheme when we visited but, even if we had paid full price, I would have still been delighted with our meal.
