The Railway
With a prominent position in the centre of Buxton, The Railway is a popular pub with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The large, open-plan layout makes for a comfortable environment and the pub is nicely furnished. There’s a fantastic beer garden too which is great for people watching on a warm, sunny day.
A Joseph Holt Pub, The Railway is popular with people of all ages and really does cater for everyone. Having visited several times, we have found that the food can be a bit ‘hit and miss’ but they do have quite an extensive menu serving up pub classics, burgers and pizzas. A good choice of vegetarian and vegan options are also available.
At the bar, you can get a decent priced pint of cask ale, award-winning lager and craft beer, plus there’s a good choice of bottled beers, wines and spirits. One of my favourites is Spin Doctor, a clean-tasting, hoppy indie lager which is very refreshing.
The Railway can become quite busy at times and with COVID restrictions we were keen to see how they handled the rules which needed to be in place.
The inside is well-spaced out and hand sanitiser is available throughout the pub. The track and trace system is simple to complete on entry, with either paper forms to fill in or by using the electronic QR code system.
We visited just after lockdown restrictions had been eased, which meant that we could order food and drinks at the bar, but this will have changed now.
I was feeling particularly ravenous on the day of our visit, so opted for the All Day Breakfast, whilst Gemma chose Sausages and Mash. Both of these dishes are available as the 2 for £13 option on the menu, offering excellent value for money!

On the day of our visit, the food was DELICIOUS. My all-day feast included sausage, black pudding, bacon, two fried eggs, mushrooms, chips, tomato and baked beans whilst Gemma enjoyed what she described as ‘incredibly tasty’ pork and Joseph Holt’s ale sausages served with creamy mash, peas and gravy.
We were both very much impressed with the quality of the food and the great level of service from staff.
Overall, The Railway is worth a visit. You’ll receive a warm welcome whilst having the choice to enjoy value for money food that can be washed down with a good selection of well-kept ales.
