Lubens
We have a simple mission at Eat Drink Buxton; to share with you the very best places to eat and drink in our lovely town and Lubens is definitely one of the very best places to eat, drink and relax in Buxton.
Nestled near the top of Hall Bank and just off the market place, Lubens offers a warm welcome to both visitors and locals alike. There’s a good choice of cask ales and continental beers available, along with an extensive selection of wines, cocktails and spirits.
Lubens isn’t really a pub, nor is it a restaurant as such – it’s more like a continental style cafe bar. You know, the sort of place that you might discover whilst on holiday abroad. The place where all the locals go because the food is really good and the prices are not too expensive. Where you can enjoy a refreshing, locally-produced beer (or two) and where the house wine reflects the quality of the establishment. That’s exactly what Lubens is like.
Inside, its rather quirky. An eclectic mix of tables and soft furnishings make for a very comfortable visit and there’s an interesting collection of wall art to view once you find your preferred seat. As soon as you step through the door you are welcomed by their lovely and very attentive staff. The whole place has a relaxed and informal vibe. If it’s a hot day then this is the perfect place to seek some shelter. If it is cold outside then the log fires will warm your bones.
If you are hungry then there are some fantastic food choices, from pub classics or sharing platters through to some delicious dishes promoting local produce from the regularly changing specials board. We’ve eaten here many times and have never been disappointed. When we visited for this review, it was to celebrate Andrew’s birthday.
It was a lovely summers day and we were greeted at the door by the very personable Lucy. Bars and restaurants had just started to open again and COVID restrictions were in place. The inside was well-spaced out and hand sanitiser was available throughout the pub. The track and trace system was a necessity and we had table service throughout our visit.
Once seated at our table we both had a glass of Jaipur whilst perusing the menu. With over 100 worldwide awards, this is a deliciously drinkable IPA brewed in nearby Bakewell and its always available on the taps here. Best not to drink too much of it though, at 5.9% it packs quite a punch!
As it was a scorcher of a day, we opted to graze over a sharing board of mixed meats, pickles and dips, accompanied by baked camembert. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Washed down with a lovely bottle of white wine and finished with the ‘house’ cheesecake, this made for a perfect celebratory meal.

Whether you live in Buxton or are here as a visitor, then you really must add a visit to Lubens to your to-do list, we promise that you’ll love this wonderful place just as much as we do! It can get quite busy at times, so we’d suggest you book in advance on 01298 384394. It’s also worth checking their Facebook Page for upcoming events and theme nights.
